David M. Taylor
David was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario. He graduated magna cum laude with a Baccalaureate in Applied Science in Electrical Engineering (Co-op) from the University of Ottawa in 2007. David moved to Calgary to attend law school at the University of Calgary in 2007, and earned his Juris Doctor (J.D.) in 2010. David was called to the Alberta Bar in August of 2011.
In law school David developed a passion for helping individuals through negotiation and courtroom litigation. He was a leader of Student Legal Assistance (SLA), which provides legal assistance and court representation to underprivileged individuals on civil, criminal, and family law matters. David was also a member of the 2010 University of Calgary Gale Cup moot team where he received intensive advocacy training over a four-month period from several senior practitioners for a competition in the Court of Appeal in Toronto.
David began his legal career at the City of Calgary’s Law Department. While assisting on a variety of municipal legal issues, David’s practice emphasized litigation work where he focused on defending the City on civil suits, as well as sitting as a bylaw prosecutor. At the City David was frequently in front of the court, and in his capacity as a prosecutor conducted over 100 bylaw trials.
In June of 2012, David accepted an opportunity to practice in the area of family law and joined Soby Boyden Lenz LLP. David is dedicated to assisting his clients’ reach lasting resolutions in all areas of family law. He believes in utilizing negotiation, mediation, as well as the Courts to achieve their goals, while always being mindful of cost effectiveness. David prides himself on being able to respectfully manage what can sometimes be difficult and emotional matters, while at the same time being a zealous advocate for his clients. David has experience in all areas of family law and has successful appeared for clients in the Provincial Court of Alberta, the Court of Queen’s Bench, as well as the Alberta Court of Appeal.
When not assisting his client, David enjoys traveling (including Egypt, South Korea, Japan and Cuba recently), working out at the gym, playing dodgeball, and engaging in high adrenaline activities. David is also passionate about helping out those in his community, and is actively involved in volunteering his services with Student Legal Assistance and Calgary Legal Guidance.
